A TOUCH OF HISTORY & INTERESTING DETAILS

This year the Merano Palace celebrates its 100th anniversary. However, its history dates back much further than that: in 1285, when the Count and Prince of Tyrol, Meinhard II acquired the then Maur castle the domain was no more than a huge farm. Originally intended as a fortress, it changed hands many times over the centuries, and it was not until the early 16th century that it became a manorial seat.

At the beginning of the last century the entrepreneur Peter Deluan acquired the Château and its adjoining parkland. A veritable botanical treasure trove, the park boasted a vegetable garden, a magnificent botanical garden and even a vineyard. With pleasure trips becoming increasingly popular with the European aristocracy, a decision was taken to build a palace that could appeal to their refined taste. After only 18 months, in 1906, the Palace Hotel threw open its portals. Inspired by the palaces of the Côte d’Azur, its neo-classical architecture – with its generous dimensions - made for magnificent salons throughout the hotel. Dignitaries from all over the world flocked to enjoy the mild Mediterranean climate, the pure, dry air for which Merano is renowned and last but not least, the impeccable service.

Some years later, its name became Italianised, and the building transformed into a Palazzo-style hotel. During the dark years of the 2nd World War, the hotel was commandeered as a garrison for the German infantry and air force. During this occupation, the building sustained significant damage. When the then owners, the Liebl family, made it clear that they could not afford to pay for the necessary repairs, the town’s business community and real property owners came to their rescue. Unable to bear the thought of seeing the jewel in Merano’s crown falling into the hands of unscrupulous property speculators, they set up a company with 80 shareholders, to finance the renovation project and relaunch the hotel.

In response to the growing demands from both the spa visitors and discerning travellers from all over the world, modernisation work was started in 1972: the panorama storey was raised; the kitchens extended; a spa centre created in the basement area; an outdoor swimming pool built in the park; rooms and panoramic suites added, and a restaurant “Grillstube Schloss Maur” opened within the Château. The early 80s saw the arrival of Dominique and Henri Chenot, who soon set about renovating the spa centre. In 2000, a new pavilion was added to accommodate a Wellness Center. This has made the Merano Palace - Espace Henri Chenot one of the most prestigious, sought-after thermal destinations in Europe. The Palace is now – once again! - the crowning glory of Merano.
